Visum USA / Kanada (Sonstiges)

Australians - and many other countries can get the 90 day visa with almost no effort - but the B2 visa is also just as available provided you meet the conditions. Maybe one of the conditions is having wrinkles and grey hair - and I easily pass that one - but it isn't so easy to get. I'd believe that any youngish single person with a small bank account might have to jump through more hoops. First fill in a very comprehensive on-line application form which includes some very searching questions along the lines of " are you going to the US to overthrow the US government" and "have you ever avoided paying mandatory school fees".
If that is accepted, you then have to attend the nearest consulate or embassy to be interviewed - by two separate officers.
Then you get the visa. And it isn't cheap either so it isn't much good to just the occasional visitor. We have been back 4 times, each time for 4 to 6 months and have a few more trips to go so for us, the flexibility and extra time for each visit is worth it. We leave a motorhome in storage near LA so it makes the whole thing very convenient.

(the Australian passport is right up there with the best as far as visa-free and visa costs entry goes. There are a few with better entry conditions due to the reciprocity payments but not too many)
