Not experienced at shipping though. I built an expedition vehicle specifically to take to SA but chickened out.

Port procedures will vary with the port and the particular shipper. Grimbaldi is one (assuming it is still in operation - and every second vehicle seems to come in on their ship so their procedures would be well known.

The vehicle usually enters under a Temporary Vehicle Import Permit - TIP or TVIP - which will be issued as part of the port procedures at port of entry and thereafter as part of the border crossing procedures at the Aduana Office. Usual sequence is Immigration for passport stamping out of the country, Aduana to hand in the TIP and hopefully so they can actually cancel it in their computer system. Then to ingoing Immigration and then to Aduana for issue of a new TIP. Don't miss any and make sure they do stamp your passports in and out (they forget) and that all details on your TIP are correct. Good practice is to take a photocopy of your TIP and when you leave, get the officer to stamp your copy out so you have proof if you later reenter that country and they find uncancelled TIP on the computer.

Limited expereience with all countries, but the vehicle is not entered into your passport. Brazil does not issue TIP s at the moment (said to be just temporary for the World Cup and upcoming Olympics) and they don't enter it in your passport BUT it is noted in the tourist entry slips that are usually issued when you have your passport stamped in (don't lose that either - I staple it into the back of the passport)

English speaking South Americans - yes, millions of them and many of the staff in immigration and aduana offices have mediocre to excellent English (and sometimes German) and given my almost complete lack of functional Spanish (or Portuguese) I am always pathetically grateful when they make an effort.
