I'd suggest checking the current situation because Mexico has been gradually tightening up. Slide-on campers on pickups aren't regarded as RVs for the purposes of the 10 year rule, and entry under any classification can be diffifult at some borders. As for leaving the RV behind - checking is also suggested because there have been stories of people getting to the airport and being refused boarding
