I guess there is always a choice between driving illegally overseas and staying home.

International Convention on Motor vehicles requires registration documents to be carried when overseas and the obvious intention of that requirement is the documents be current and valid. If they are not then you are driving illegally and if you are driving illegally any insurance you have taken out under false pretenses will also be illegal.

I can never understand the distinction some people make between being law-abiding citizens back home and law-breakers in another country.

Maybe we should go back to reading the pages and pages of fine print that the insurance companies give us, especially the bits regarding our duty of disclosure
