Fehrzeugkauf vor Ort vs. Verschiffung - generelle Fragen (Sonstiges)

I've bought two quite different vehicles in S America (and in fact have bought two others in other parts of the world) all totally sight-unseen from private owners and in all cases the vehicles were exactly as described. In the two SA cases, the previous owners had fairly/VERY extensive blogs covering their entire period of ownership and from those, and other information such as spending logs, it was quite easy to come up with a very detailed picture of their condition.

One thing to be very wary of is the authenticity of your ownership as with some vehicles it is not possible for someone of different nationality to own it. In other cases, once that vehicle was originally exported, all original papers including license plates became null and void and operation from then on relied on forged paperwork.

The final beware item is how you will cross borders and assume "legal' ownership of the vehicle in such a way that you can re-enter that country confident that the border personnel will not pick up some serious anomaly - and that you can get into any subsequent countries without any hassles.. A good example is uncancelled Temporary Import permits - uncancelled not because of action or inaction on the part of the previous owner, but because the border people never get around to keeping the paperwork up to date.

Yes, the price may be well considerably higher than you could pick up a similar vehicle for in the US or even back home, but then you have to figure the time and costs of getting that vehicle to where it is that you want to buy it. The same premium can be obtained when you sell it.

All comes down to final costs per day. Too short and it might be better to hire. 3 months, buy a heap and give it away. 12 months or more then bring your own. $5000 Euro spread over 12 months isn't all that much per day and would be repaid by the sheer convenience of having your own vehicle and all the gear already installed.
