Australia - and probably most other western countries - have a traveller bulletin service for each country that we can get by email and that will keep us informed about specific new risks. Current one concerns the bird flu.
They also have a registration system so our government has at least a bit of a chance of assisting if there is anything major happening in the country we are travelling in.

Trouble is most (younger) travellers who are born bulletproof don't register and don't take out travel insurance and then scream the loudest when they get into trouble
