We wild camp whenever possible, although obviously when we want to be near a major city, it is more convenient to stay at an established campground if there are any.
Sometimes use iOverlander spots, but also find places ourselves and then post them on iOverlander.

I wouldn't react too much based on just one report. If they were frequent, we would hear about them as the reports would be posted on every forum and facebook page and the reality is that they are very few and far between. Obviously requires a bit of common sense similar to what applies back home in Australia where it is sensible to camp at least 15km away from a major town, but with no problems camping close to small villages.
