SOAT insurance for Ecuador - Wohl nur Personenschäden (Sonstiges)

Yes, that is how I read it and we just accept the consequences by essentially self-insuring in South America AND having two dash cameras running at all times. The two cameras are to guard against the local crazies who make the sign of the cross and close their eyes before carrying out every overtaking manoeuvre. Unfortunately my atheistic deities give no such support.

In the US, we have so-called comprehensive cover on the other motorhome and I was surprised to see how paltry the sums were and queried them. Was assured this was normal for US policies but I wasn't satisfied and kept badgering Progressive until they raised my cover to the maximum possible - which was still minuscule compared to equivalent policy coverage in Australia. They told me if I have a prang that is not my fault, pile out of the vehicle when safe and take a photo of the other vehicle and driver because drive-offs are very common.

Same with the mandatory coverage in Mexico - even now after coverage amounts were raised dramatically by government decree about three years ago, they aren't what I call generous. The levels for SOAT in Peru and for the southern countries are also fairly skimpy, but they are set by the respective governments so hopefully are adequate and will protect us against major long-running legal battles and prison holidays.
