Car with expired US registration in South America (Papierkram)

Hi,

we want to buy a US registered car (Nebraska) in Argentina but the current owner told us the registration is expired. Since the car is registered in Nebraska, is there any way for us to extend that registration from outside the US?

He told us that it is no problem to drive/insure the car within South American states even though the registration in the states is expired - is that true?
