Tom, this supposedly became possible when Brazil eliminated the Temporary Import Permits for travellers entering brazil with their vehicles.
Supposedly Brazil also doesn't enter the fact into their computer system or on their passports and it has been reported that they don't even have an aduana officer checking any vehicles as they enter.

This seems to mean we can enter brazil on our normnal 45 or 90 day personal visa, leave the vehicle there and come back years or months later on a new tourist visa, collect the vehicle and drive out over the border. Yrouble is the 'loophole' hasn't been tested 100% yet

I have recently asked the question on HUBB because i want to do exactly that when we head north towards central America, but best info so far is a couple of motorbikers have left Brazil and gone home for a few months so we aren't going to know for sure until they return and try to cross the border with their bikes.
