Buying a motorhome in Santiago with CALIFORNIA papers... (Sonstiges)

Du+Nica, Sonntag, 18. Februar 2018, 18:52 (vor 2230 Tagen)

Hello everyone,

We are in Santiago and we are looking for a motorhome to buy so we can start fulltime RV living and travelling [1].

A few minutes ago we caught a classifieds-like advert for a motorhome being sold near here for a very low price: it's a very old one but we think the vehicle would suit us, and the seller swears "everything works", and presents as the sole reason for the low price the fact that the vehicle has a CALIFORNIA (ie, USA) title.

We've read about people in our situation (ie, foreigners) buying foreign vehicles in Chile and being able to drive them around with the original documents plus a "poder" (which we understand is some kind of notarized document where the seller declares we are now the legal owners of the vehicle), but how well does that work? How could it restrict us? Anything in special we should pay attention to? We will of course subject it to a complete mechanical inspection, but we are really worried about the documentation part...

With a "Poder" and i would suggest getting also an "authorization", you can cross borders in whole South America and visit almost all countries.

The exception is Peru! Here you have to be the owner! Some people made it thorugh either way...

And actually here you can see the problem, you have the contract, poder and authorization but you are NOT the owner. You are just allowed to drive and use the vehicle.

In california it´s -i think i read so- also not possible to become the owner without being present. Have you thought about selling it later again. This can be a hazzle...you are not the owner!

Nevertheless if you will decide buying it. Make a contract, the autorization and the poder at a notaria, so it is official -at least.
After this it is very important to clear the TVIP. As long as the seller is written down there you need him to leave the country with you and the car, otherwise the car will stuck in chile.
Go to the next border with him, go out and in with your name in the tvip.

Afterwards you can travel with the restrictions i wrote at the beginning!

By the way: in argentina it is totally forbidden to sell and buy a forgeign registered car! Do not make the transfer there!

Good Luck!

PS: To get a South American registered car, Chile isn´t the best place anymore, but at least you can be the owner and it will be your vehicle. In Chile it´s easy to find pick ups with a cabine or camping cars.

All good advice. The only extra I would add is one of the reasons for getting a poder is to allow you to drive in Chile AND out of Chile without the legal owner being present. Saves possible problems if the owner is present of course but in the three sales I have taken place in, the owner has long gone and only the 'borrower" is there to take it across the border. Helps to have a copy of the owners passport and drivers license as well just in case the border people want more proof that you have permission.

For the last sale I got a poder drawn up in Santiago and that was OK for new owner getting out of Chile

Hi Du and Nica,

we bought our pick-up with camper in Santiago (also with a California plate) and didn't have any trouble crossing borders between Chile and Argentina several times. We also have the original documents and a poder of a notary.
Since we need to go back to Germany we are selling the camper mid-March in Santiago and it is still availabe. Maybe you are interested? http://panamericanaforum.org/index.php?mode=entry&id=22800
Do not hesitate if you have any questions.

Thanks everyone for the great info, and sorry for the long delay in responding, but we spent the best part of the last 2 months going through some unrelated and all-absorbing "stuff" which we even have to go back "home" for. Anyway, we're now back in Chile and also back to searching for a suitable motorhome -- and we think we may have found one, please see our other message here.

Regarding that California motorhome we asked about, the seller never responded to our messages... so maybe it was just a scam and s/he noticed we weren't complete fools. We have stumbled upon (and avoided) a few of the "advanced fee" scams so far.
