Mexico is one of 5 countries that insist on in-country providers of compulsory liability insurance.

Never heard of any Mexican authority demanding to see the policy documents, but if you have an accident and don't have insurance and the "legals" option, you can expect a long wait behind bars waiting for a court to allocate blame.
Don't know if it is a must for motorbikes or not, but if not, it should be.

Seems to be easy to get at or near the borders with each country and some policies can apply to several countries. Peru said to be a problem because not all agents know that short-term policies can be issued.
