I shipped my camper van on a roro ship from Baltimore to Antwerp and I only needed the original paper (registered in The Netherlands).
I drove from Mexico to Arizona 5 months earlier. Nobody asked then for temporary import, so the van has not been registrated then.
Maybe your shipping documents, especially the customs declaration, from Europe to the American continent could solve your problem.
