Can't be absolutely certain that it always is the case, but it was said that it is extremely difficult to find a barge going back south - whereas from Corumba going north there are quite a few barges delivering to all places up towards Corumba but even then we were the only cargo and passengers for most of the last day of the trip.

From Porto north, the road was deeply rutted from the wet season not long finished and I wouldn't like to have to drive it during the wet.
