Thanks everyone for the great info, and sorry for the long delay in responding, but we spent the best part of the last 2 months going through some unrelated and all-absorbing "stuff" which we even have to go back "home" for. Anyway, we're now back in Chile and also back to searching for a suitable motorhome -- and we think we may have found one, please see our other message here.

Regarding that California motorhome we asked about, the seller never responded to our messages... so maybe it was just a scam and s/he noticed we weren't complete fools. We have stumbled upon (and avoided) a few of the "advanced fee" scams so far.
