That is certainly the correct way to approach it but I'd suggest that isn't always so easy to do if you are on your own surrounded by three or four police intent on extracting some christmas party money - especially if it is essentially a fair cop such as no lights on or crossing double lines which I have been caught for but never paid a fine - twice because they were happy just to let me know they COULD have fined me and once because he got so greedy with the amount of the fine that he realised he had gone way too far. I was also sitting in a Yank-Tank with my wife so that extends my comfort zone a lot.
