Not exactly the same situation, but close. I have copies of the official confiscation order made by Argentinian Customs against a foreigner who illegally bought a vehicle in Argentina. He took it in and out of Argentina at least twice after the first time he took it out, but eventually they looked a bit closer at the documentation on the fourth entry and decided the original purchase was illegal. They drew up the document and that was the end of the vehicle. No option to turn around and go back to Chile. The new owners were allowed to take all their personal stuff with them and they took a bus to BA and flew home. End of journey.

Another couple I talked to were caught up in a similar problem getting out of Argentina into Bolivia. They didn't have the vehicle confiscated, but they did have to pay a relatively huge amount of money to make things right.

Another traveller bought a foreigners vehicle in Ushuaia and his father took it across several borders and eventually back into Argentina. Traveler tried to take it into Uruguay and lost it.

Yes, nothing to do with CR, but given nearly all countries have similar laws, I imagine things there might work the same way.

Another case more similar to yours, but in Argentina, where the previous owners left him in the lurch, the new owner arranged a Poder in Spain and after two or three tries at getting across, eventually found one that was too slack and let him pass. Once in the next country he was able to regularise his ownership by using his new registration papers and number plate. Of course the original TIP in all of these cases was still current. Once it expires it adds another layer of difficulty.

Plenty of other stories, some successful and some not. Hope yours is one of the successful ones.
