The north Americans have similar problems taking post 2007 vehicles south of the border because of excessive regeneration cycles (they mostly use the urea injection system). On various forums get occasional references to back-yard mechanics removing components and defeating the interlocks.

In Argentina quite a few fuel outlets have eurodiesel pumps but it is quite usual for them to have no eurodiesel fuel. We were driving a vehicle that had been proven to run quite well on supermarket cooking oil, but figured filling every couple of fills with eurodiesel mightn't hurt - but after many knockbacks, we gave up asking.

Bolivia might be a particular problem where a combination of high altitude over half the country plus reports of pretty low-grade diesel everywhere might cause big problems.

I read a trip report about a couple who hired a modern vehicle in Buenos Aries to do a round trip of Argentina and Chile and a couple of times they got part way up a pass and had to turn around and go back down. I'll see if I can find it.

Lots to be said about pre-euro-anything engines - preferably with a turbo - that will run on anything, smoke a lot at altitude and get slower and slower but never stop.
