Safety on the Panamericana (Sonstiges)

globusoverland, Mittwoch, 19. September 2007, 18:58 (vor 6036 Tagen)

My girlfriend and I are planning to drive the PanAmericana next year. From Alaska to Argentina with our own VW Bus.We both have quite a lot of travel experience: she cycled from Germany to Mozambique, while I drove with my combi from Holland to Tibet, and from Capetown back to Holland. We both traveled without too many problems.
And for now, the PanAmericana.

BUT!

Almost every internetsite I checked, I read about robberies, violence and "Vergewaltigungen".
Ofcourse I know that people like to talk more about the bad and dangerous things rather than the nice expereniences, but when there's smoke...
So, my question to you all is: Is driving the Panamericana really so dangerous as I'm made believe?
Especially cities like Cusco, Lima etc seem to be a no-go!
Did you (often) feel unsafe, what are your experencies from other travelers etc.
Ofcourse I've also read the story of Katharina und Peter:(http://kirsten.schurich.com) but I still think this is an exception.
Thanks in advance for your reactions.(German written no problem!)
Danke,
Michel

Fragen?

Hallo Harald,
sehr vielen dank für Ihren Antwort! As you can see on my own website, I´ve traveled quite a lot myself and I know that you can get far when you use your normal feeling and sense. It´s only because I read so many scam-articles for countries as Peru and Bolivia. Not just robbery, but real violence...
Do you think it´s got more to do with backpackers rather than Overlanders?
Hope to hear from you again,
Mitch

I drove my Chevy Suburban in 2006 with no problems from Canada to CR,just travel during the day and you ´ll be fine.
Bring plenty of copies of your paperwork as well.
Make sure you have good brakes and plenty of transmission fluid with you.
If you need a place in CR,check out my campground and hostel at www.alajuelacampground.com
Safe trip!:-D
