Cross borders problems with Chilean car (Papierkram)

Ebelloni, Sonntag, 14. Juli 2013, 13:32 (vor 3946 Tagen)

We have now bought one in Stg 2 months ago following the advice that with a Chilean car we could travel all SA countries without any major problems.

Unfortunately we faced some challenges along some borders to which we get no reliable information in other forums and would thank you so much for anyone's help..

A week ago we wanted to cross the border from Arica to Tacna. There we were rejected by the Chilean Authorities, because we are foreigners and have no residence in Chile (this seems to be new).
Since we were already once in Bolivia with the car, we decided to go to La Paz and enter Peru through Bolivia and later reenter Chile through Tacna/Arica.

Both Bolivian and Chilean Authorities said it would be ok but our experience says that the information is not always correct. Forums and Blogs also give contraditory info.

We post our issue here with the hope someone can give or share any experience and know if our intinerary Bolivia/Peru/Chile is viable or not.

The car documentation is all right, besides that they contain only the five last numbers of the chassis. This caused some probems at the Bolivian border in Chungara/Tambo Quemado, but seems to depend on the official's mood. In Ollague they even not look at the car.

We left Chile and are now in Bolivia and  have the document (declaracion juramentada) for the temporary stay of the car in Bolivia. Concretely our questions are:
- Can we leave Bolivia to Peru without any problems?
- What happens to the declaracion juramntadata in the border Bol/Peru, since this seems to be valid only between Chile and Bolivia?
- What papers do we get entering Peru?
- Do we get into Chile via Tacna/Arica, and finaly,
- Did anyone have the issue with the chassis number?

We will still stay some days here before heading to Peru and would appreciate very much any info provided.
Thank you very much
Edmundo and Robert

Hi Ebelloni,

I wanted to ask you how it worked for you to cross the boarder in Bolivia and then to Peru? We also want to go north with a chilean car. We would go from San Pedro de Atacama (Chile) to Uyuni (Bolivia) and then to La Paz from there to Peru. Is this the way you did it? Or anybody else did this roads is it good to go?

We have the temporary RUT already more then 3months so this RUT is expiered. Is this a porbem? Between Aregentina and Chile it was never a problem.
How is it with other Countries? We want to go to Bolivia, Ecuador, Peru and maybe Brazil.

Would be nice to hear from you or anybody elso who did this trip with chilean car.

Cross borders problems with Chilean car

How did it work out?

We tried to cross into Peru today from Arica, Chile and had the same problem. I own the car, everything is in my name, we have all the papers, we just couldn't take the car with us because I am not a resident.

We are going to attempt to try the Peruvian consulate on Monday to see if there's anything they can do for us!

email me at sethayates [at] gmail [dot] com as that might be easier!

Thanks!
