Probably because you ARE resetting the clock by completely leaving the contiguous North America.
Some people seem to manage to get extra time or a clock reset when crossing from Canada or Mexico back into the USA, but there is no official basic for hoping to get any special treatment so it is unwise to count on it.

I wrote to the immigration department asking if being in Canada for say 2 months would allow for a clock reset and they said that the only way officially to reset the clock was to fly outside of North America and fly back again
