What kind of car? (Sonstiges)

Hey travelers,
I m planing to come to sa in November and travel arround with my friend for like 6 month... we want to buy a car in chile... my question is now... what kind of car should we buy? I m in love with the vw van s( t1,2,3), but they are super old, can they manage the road s in sa? Or is it better to buy a defender or for example the chevy astro van? Gas or diesel ( is it easy to get diesel in each country or would it be easier to buy a Gas one)? And how is it with the secruity (break into the car)
Can you give me some advise, help, tips, ideas?
