The correct answer is some time between immediately and never.

Previous owners of a car we bought entered Argentina and were pulled up because there were FOUR uncancelled TIP against their name. They were able to sort it out once they were given temporary permission to enter and go to the Aduana head office in Salta but it took a couple of days of crosschecking between their passports and the computer record.
Just as well they were caught because a few weeks later it would have been us in big trouble and more important, with no way of resolving it.
