Borrowing would mean you need to get a PODER drawn up giving you authority to drive the car. Not always successful. Peru for instance may refuse you entry.

Lots of overlanders ship their own vehicle from Europe to S America with Montivideo being the usual port of entry.

Buying and selling foreign vehicles to other foreigners is mostly illegal unless major hurdles are jumped, but many do it and nearly all get away with it. Foreigners can buy locally plated vehicles in some countries, with Chile being popular.
