Wolfgang, a good starting point is here

www.hackneys.com/travel/docs/propane4xvehicles.pdf

and although it is a few years old, not a lot has changed. Recent arrivals in Montevideo have asked the same questions and have received the same advice - being that getting propane in some countries is very difficult. Brazil, Argentina are two such.

iOverlander.com database has some - a handful - places in the whole of south america and most of those are for refilling US or European bottles. Those with fixed tanks must either fill up in the few countries that have autogas pumps - Peru uses the cup type coupling and Chile is said to use the large ACME coupling. Argentiina has mostly compressed natural gas so no use to you. Can try and meet up with a local propane delivery truck who might fill your fixed tank.

I only have bottles so have developed a kit that allows me to gravity fill from many local bottles to any other bottle and includes filling fixed tanks

I've added to it since then.

Despite the perception that underdeveloped countries must have underdeveloped laws on industrial safety, some countries in South America have very strict rules on filling non-local bottles or on any shonky practices such as gravity filling so you might have to try many propane plants before finding one that will help you out.
