Permit Probleme bei Fahrzeugkauf in Costa Rica (Papierkram)

In at least one state in Canada it is absolutely impossible to do the change of ownership remotely, but don't know about the others. Each state has a website detailing the procedure. Same for some states in the US and a couple in Australia too.

Plenty of travellers (supposedly) driving around using a Poder and the great majority apparently never come up against a single problem or we would hear about it - but I suspect the real reason is they are good at using Photoshop.

Photoshop + willing or totally naive buyer even allow you to sell the vehicle again, but then logic says you can't provide a Poder to the next owner when you are yourself operating under a poder from the legal owner - I think. So any subsequent legal sale might be difficult to arrange. The poders I have, unlike thge equivalent US document, include some cute little antiforging features which might stop photoshop aficionados.

Once you finish the trip, the value of the vehicle might be low enough that you can just walk away from it and take the loss. A pragmatic view is that to hire any sort of live-in vehicle in S America would cost you minimum of 100 euro a day so after 6 months you have paid for a 10,000 euro vehicle more than once anyway. We paid $3000 for our first vehicle, drove all over Argentina and Chile for 6 months and because it was due for some expensive repairs (that we knew about before we bought it) we just gave it away to a local with a big cattle station to use as a runabout.

Not that it is much consolation but posts looking for help to solve problems arising from purchasing a vehicle aren't uncommon on other forums, and unfortunately what is also uncommon is to see advice posted which solves the problem. Rarely is the outcome posted so that contributes to the scarcity of useful information the next time around.
