We bought a vehicle for USD3000, used it for 6 months and then gave it away. Depending on your timetable, it might not be possible to sell the vehicle when you finish with it so might be best to plan on taking a fairly big loss on selling it.

Fuel is cheaper in Chile and Argentina than in Europe, but not by a huge margin so a big expense might be fuel if you intend to drive every day or every two days. Camping can be free or close to it if you make the effort and municipal campgrounds are only a few dollars anyway.
