Not sensible to gloss over potential problems involved in buying a foreign-registered vehicle anywhere outside the country of original registration.

For instance - to get into most countries (that don't require a Carnet) with a vehicle, all the paperwork has to match - passport, title, registration - before a TIP will be issued. If it doesn't match, you will need extra paperwork to cover anything that doesn't match. Ie a poder/Power of Attorney signed by the actual owner that gives the driver permission to cross the border(s).

Once that vehicle is inside the country, then getting it out requires pretty much the same matching paperwork.

Can be done and is done, but you can't count on it being successful. The sloppier you are with getting paperwork in order, the more likely you are to come unstuck. Listening to those who claim they have done this or that and never had a problem, is just about guaranteed to result in you having a big problem.

Border post people have ultimate power and regardless of rules, or usual practice, can tell you to rack off just because they don't like the colour of your shoes.

BTW - there are many vehicles getting around S America that have no current registration and/or fake number plates and/or photoshopped paperwork and which are driven by people who will tell you any story just to be able to get rid of their vehicle and fly home. So be careful.
