Dieselqualität (Technisches)

True, A vehicle that age will certainly have been settled in as far as initial breakdowns and big depreciation hit goes, but the downside might be more problems to do with emission control systems and fuel supply.

Recent stories here relate Mercedes vehicles as being unable to cope with altitude+fuel quality issues and other new vehicles report total failure of diesel particulate filter regeneration.
US vehicles seem to have gone for urea injection systems and you may need to arrange supply of that in some areas as well as being prepared for excessively-frequent regeneration burns.

Not necessarily a trip stopper provided you do your research and adjust driving technique or route accordingly. Not much fun on getting to within a couple of hundred metres of a 5000 metre pass and having to turn back with an engine running on limp mode. No point in asking the manufacturers either - European or North American - because they will tell you their vehicles meet whatever the mandatory standards are in effect in the home country and if you take them into a worse operating environment, that is your problem.
