Two sorts of insurance - the usually compulsory one that insures against damage, injury and death of others, and the insurance that covers your own vehicle and possessions.

For instance, most US insurers will cover your vehicle and possessions in Mexico, but the Mexican government insist that the liability insurance is provided by Mexican insurers.

Many/most other central and south american countries have similar requirements in that insurance for your vehicle is your problem (and often difficult and expensive to get) while liability insurance is mandatory.

Lots of travellers use forged documents but that isn't a smart move. In Mexico, they say if you are in an accident and don't have the local insurance with plenty of legal representation cover, you are likely to sit in prison for a long time until it is all sorted out.
